There is a story told sometimes, by those near the edge of the forest, of a young girl who saw an angel. Most of those who tell it don't believe it, but it makes a good story for when the winter is at its coldest and all of the stories have exhausted themselves into silence.

She has seen fire before, many times.

Fire from lightening strike, which cleanses the forest of deadwood and sometimes, gloriously, brings new life into bloom.

In many fires she had been legs and wings for the wild things trapped. Once, when wildfire raged through the night, she'd found a warren of bunnies nearly ready to go on their own, their mother a terrified watcher as the flames grew closer. Gathering them in her arms, it was almost too late that she noticed the encircling flames.
