Karamoon Konversation

A Roleplay Community in Secondlife

Okay,Now I'm not the type for meter combat, for me ...role play was majority text..even combat.. and weapons were normally only used as props.. if any meter combat was involved.. it was after a small bit of posting.. Yet,I'm finding that "within the rules" ..If a person threatens me and such with a quick short post and I go to respond in my normal paragraphs. I'm at a disadvantage because they're attacking me and I'm typing. :P Or somewhere along those lines.. in aforementioned scenario..

...I'd like to hear opinions on this.. Karamoon is probably the most well run, built and moderated fantasy sim on Second Life.. I wouldn't want to leave it over something as small the meter.. Because I will be absolutely serious,it is a jungle out there.. and every other "fantasy" rp sim.. is horribly horribly done, extremely barren of people.. or mismanaged and full of holes..

..On a side note..and slightly offtopic. I"m going to have Yuanra return to the Port this weekend,I might post it as a event or not, seeing that,if I can get some more players for my little idea,well..More "faerunians" To assist in the fight..

But enough of me blathering on... Let me hear what you guys have in store for me as a response. ^_^

Generally I wait for a response, it seems only polite and I know some people take longer to type out what they want to say than others.

It would be a good idea to maybe preface a long response in that situation with something like ((one sec, long response)) so I know you haven't gone AFK, I haven't dealt with anyone yet in greater Ambrea who wouldn't wait a moment.

This is the downside of most of us having typing animation overriders, no indication we are doing anything other than standing there :)

If, after your response, they are hell bent on sticking something steel into you then perhaps it's not time to be verbose and it's time to let your feet do your talking for you... I know that were I to demand someones surrender/money/life/whatever and they just keep trying to discus the matter then it's time to start swinging. We have the escape rule for a reason, if you don't want to fight you are given a very clear out, run away.
there has been another post similar to this, not about meter attacking while one is responding, but on not waiting for those who enjoy emoting and throughly discribing thier responces (http://karamoon.ning.com/forum/topics/ooc-when-is-the-wait-too-long ) So your not alone ;p.

I feel for you. I would suggest purhaps, a quick OOC IM sent telling them you do not meter combat, then take your time in responding as you normally would IC. . Or as i have seen others do add to your meter title that you do not meter combat.
heeeey... i know that post! *blushes that others remembered it*

And yeah, I have that problem alot, but like everyone else says, the OOC IM or quick /22 ooc alert of a longer response helps a bunch. Most players are pretty cool about it and will wait once they know they are in for something and they generally work better with you both IC and OOC if you give them the initial courtesy.
I agree with Zen, an ooc announcement that your post is in the works is a good way to avoid getting chopped down before you can reply though it burns me up to think someone is just hopping right into the hack and slash without a little response.

Also, I throw this out to everyone if you want to learn to meter fight the Northvegr are always announcing their OOC spar sessions, please feel free to drop in observe, ask questions, or participate.

You will also find that if requested there are those players that will dice fight over meter. I refuse to meter anyone under level 4 unless they absolutely insist so dice is the way to go. While my health increase still gives me a advantage I just find it to be fair play.
Because the form of combat is up to the people involved, when it's just one on one, I often ask for text or dice combat in IM if a situation is escalating. If they really prefer meter, then its always possible to arrange to stay with text for a little bit to develop the scene either before of afterwards. That way they get to cut you up badly, but you both have the enjoyment of the text engagement :)

Just a few minutes deciding how to incorporate text makes all the difference and I find that most players are happy to accommodate that if they have the time.
All very well said here... and agree totally with Zen.. a short post leading to a longer one should do if your certain you want to post at all.. and we all have the chance to "run Forest.. RUN!"
After ... dang ... 4 years of RP on Second Life ... I have come to the following conclusion:

There are one-word RPers, paragraph RPers, and people who fall somewhere in-between. Everyone has their own preference and reason for that preference -- and sometimes the different schools will yell at each other regarding the various philosophies.

My personal standpoint is:

I don't care how much or how little you type - but if you leave me waiting for a reply for more than 2 minutes, I reserve the right to double-post on you or walk away and end the RP right there. If you're a fast typer, 2 minutes is enough for 120 - 200 words. If you're a slow typer, 2 minutes will only let you get 60 - 80 words. In a situation where you want to say more than a short time of typing will allow, I heavily suggest stopping the first message in a location where continuance is obvious and using something like "... " or "((more))" or "-->" at the end of the message.

My reasoning for this preference is simple: I like to keep the flow of role-play going. If I'm waiting 5, 10, even 15 minutes for your response ... my mind is wandering. I'm thinking about who the Patriots are going to put at starting OLB now that they've lost Vrabel, or about how I can whip up a good dinner with minimal work-effort. If posts come relatively quickly, my attention is retained and the role-play flows ... even if I'm reading 2 or 3 posts in a row before you're finished -- at least I have something to read :-)

Now ... with my personal preference there out of the way, I'll get into another personal preference:

I think it's terrible, terrible role-play for someone to simply give OOC-Warning before a fight. IMHO, the only time to give OOC Warning instead of IC Warning is when lying in ambush and/or intending to "attack-on-sight". ALL other situations give ample opportunity to role-play the back and forth before a combat begins -- and in doing so beforehand, both characters can be reasonably certain when or if that combat will start. At that point, once another draws their sword, it is common courtesy to give a short reply at most ... or simply draw your sword in return at least.

By the way -- the rules do clearly state that an opponent must be given a reasonable moment to draw their weapon for defense. Any player who walks up, says "OOC Warning" ... and lays into you right away ... is actually breaking a rule of Ambrea.
Yuanra; By reasonable moment to draw - I think the rules clarify as "Fair Warning". In non prescribed "Bad Land" in like zones the aggressor is required to obtain some sort of "tangible response." When I was still active in play at the time there was also a provision for yourself for "automatic flee" of combat and a restriction between encounters. Though keep in mind there is also a denial in the rules for any OOC right to refuse combat, it's not allowed. The rule sets can seem to contradict at times.

Ah here it is, it is still there.

"f) A character may 'flee' from combat at any time. If the character has not provoked (engaged in disagreeable actions with the opponent - including exchange of words) nor engaged (by attacking ... even via text) their opponent, their flight from combat must be automatically accepted as "successful" and the fleeing character must move to at least 50 meters distant from the area. If a character has provoked or engaged an opponent, flight results in 'hot pursuit' (explained below)."
I'm generally of the opinion that if you disable your typing animation and are a paragraph poster you are just going to have to get used to be walked on. There are some really nice typing AOs that make you look like your talking instead of typing. If you really hate the typing AO but make long posts that is the way to. Its what I do with Kit.
While true, ultimately Kit I'll put to you that whether or not someone will walk out on another for any reason is not the wait but a reflection more on how much they want the RP.

If they want RP they will wait and not just wander. If they are not really into it at the moment, they will drift around for a quick fix. While they are walking 2 mins from group to group, their wait time might have been over anyway.
That is true enough. I personally dislike the typing animation... adn the ones that make you look like you are "talking". To me, its tacky and makes everyone that types look flighty or like they are giving a grand speech right before running into battle. Beside, making that a must, to have a "talking or typing" animation in order to have people know you are posting... is just rude.

Honestly the best respect you can give to another player is to just wait your 2 minutes for a response, and if you feel THAT impatient, IM them and ask if they are afk or posting. It isn't fair to force someone to lengthen OR shorten their style for your personal impatience.

If you are just not into the RPing near the person you walk by, but don't want to be rude, don't even bother with a "hello" as your post. stop, post something about dismissively waving to the person as you walk by. People can do that in RL and in RP... sometimes the character may have thoughts on their mind and not WANT to stop.

Heck, if you really don't want to RP at all, just don't stop period. I know some folk may complain about not being engaged enough, but sometimes that person might have an engagement they are rushing off too somewhere else or perhaps they are walking to a safe log out location, or logged in somewhere but would have IC been elsewhere. I'd rather not be spoken to by a player then have them stop, say "hello", then walk off less than a minute later.

Just be considerate to ALL types of roleplayers. that's the key. You'll be fine if you can follow that one simple idea. consideration.
Bink typing animation is just a suggestion

In the posts above have been given many - from wich to chose - to try to resolve this little trouble:

- OOC - preface for a following long response

- IC - add "... " or "((more))" or "-->"(or whatelese) at the end of your post so others know they have to wait

- enable the standard typing animation or wear an ovverider animation that you like

- IM them and, gently, ask if they are afk or posting

- IM them and point out wich type of combat you are agree to play

- write on your meter title wich kind of combat you are agree to play

- ...

The system itself and people creativity can give those and many more solution on the matter.
All of them are acceptable if worked politely, it is just upon every player wich one suit them better
